DESCRIPTION:Civil infrastructure assets often exceed their design life\, l
eading to an increasing awareness of the need to monitor their condition.
However\, with the emergence of many new automated sensing and condition m
onitoring systems\, there is often a lack of understanding in choosing the
most appropriate sensing strategy from the growing selection. This presen
tation presents an approach for selecting an appropriate condition monitor
ing strategy by seeking to quantify the “value of the information” pro
vided by each candidate solution\, thereby helping the decision maker to c
hoose the system that best suits the particular application. The proposed
approach has been developed with industrial applications in mind\, and is
illustrated through a case study involving condition monitoring in a sewer
  tunnel.
