DESCRIPTION:Modelling the ductile response of structures to earthquake loa
ding is far from satisfactory. Even under monotonic compression tests the
unloading at advanced strains of simple specimens is not predicted reliab
ly using numerical tools. In this seminar the work at UCL\, which address
es this problem through a reconsideration of the failure of concrete\, is
described. This leads to the suggested replacement of the cumbersome set
of different criteria for the various stress states and their possible com
binations with a singular\, previously proposed\, criterion of limiting te
nsion strain.\n\nHussam Nasreddin is managing the programme for his PhD re
search studies and John Eyre is his supervisor.\n
