DESCRIPTION:The main purpose of this seminar is to demonstrate the power o
f research methods being developed at Lancaster University which apply com
puter linguistic analyses to scientific (and other) texts made available v
ia Early English Books Online. The seminar will focus on early modern Engl
ish discourses of experiment. I will argue that these methods have refuted
the claim of Prof. Peter Harrison (_Intellectual History_\, 2011: doi: 10
.1080/17496977.2011.623882) that discourse of 'experimental philosophy' wa
s facilitated by an earlier discourse of 'experimental religion'.
