DESCRIPTION:Motivated by rock/soil slides in Nature\, I will describe some
  simple experiments to examine the final profile of released static column
 s of granular materials. A simple-minded theoretical model will be present
 ed which captures some aspects of the process but inevitably leaves many q
 uestions unanswered.
