DESCRIPTION:In many scenarios\, lifting relatively dense particles from a
sediment bed is far more difficult than might be anticipated from the conc
entrations of small particles found in the atmosphere and marine environme
nts. While the reasons for this difficulty are fairly well understood\, un
til recently most studies of relatively fine dust particles in the atmosph
eric context have concentrated on the ballistic collisions of saltating 's
and' particles. This talk will explore some elements of fluid structure/pa
rticle bed interactions\, with particular emphasis on the role of the wake
behind other particles and the resuspension due to rain drops.\n
