DESCRIPTION:The seminar is being led by the Tropical Agriculture Associati
on\, co-sponsored by the University Strategic Initiative in Global Food Se
curity\, the Humanitarian Centre and the Cambridge Conservation Forum (CCF
)\n\nThe world is facing many threats\, not least the need to feed an incr
easing population.\n\nModern technologies are encountering environmental a
nd economic constraints. Agricultural and environmental sciences need to c
onverge through agro-ecology.\n\nTwo such bodies of practice have emerged
over the last 10-20 years: the System of rice intensification (SRI) and Co
nservation Agriculture (CA)\, which enable producers to raise production w
ith lower cost\, less dependence on agro-chemical inputs and lower energy
and water requirement. These optimise conditions for crop growth\, above a
nd below ground.\n\nPresentations will be made by two TAA members\, Dr Wil
lem Stoop (University of Wageningen) on SRI\, and Dr Amir Kassam (FAO and
Reading University) on CA.\n\nThey will discuss the basic principles of th
ese agro-ecological concepts and practices\, with evidence that the approa
ches can reorientate agriculture in developed and less-developed countries
to achieve greater productivity with sustainability. There will be time f
or open discussion. Tea/Coffee and biscuits will be served. \n\n\nPlease e
mail Keith Virgo eastanglia_convenor@taa.org.uk to confirm interest and b
 ook a place.
