DESCRIPTION:Conditional independence is an important relation in probabili
ty\, statistics and several application areas. In this talk\, I shall iden
tify category-theoretic structure which captures the main properties of co
nditional independence. The structure in question arises in many contexts
other than probability\, including nominal sets\, computability theory and
group theory. While the talk will mainly focus on general properties and
 examples\, I shall end with a purely category-theoretic application: a cha
racterisation of sheaves for the atomic (Grothendieck) topology.\n
