DESCRIPTION: G_2 manifolds are special 7-dimensional manifolds which play 
 in important role in mathematics\, specifically in the study\nof metrics w
 ith special holonomy\, and in theoretical physics\, particularly since the
  work of Atiyah and Witten on M-Theory.  In\nthe physical context it is im
 portant to study G_2 manifolds that are modelled on cones: so-called conif
 olds.  These conifolds\,\nwhich may be non-compact or singular objects\, a
 lso play a pivotal role in the mathematical study of G_2 manifolds\, going
  back to\nthe first explicit examples of G_2 manifolds constructed by Brya
 nt and Salamon.  In this talk I will survey what is known about\nG_2 conif
 olds\, with a particular focus on my joint work with S. Karigiannis on mod
 uli spaces of G_2 conifolds\, which leads to a\nuniqueness result for the 
 Bryant-Salamon G_2 manifolds.
