DESCRIPTION:John Ramsay is celebrated as the person who\, in the mid-20th 
 century\, turned structural geology from a qualitative to a quantitative s
 cience*. His textbooks "Folding and fracturing of rocks" (1967) and the th
 ree-volume "The techniques of modern structural geology" (1983\, 1987\, 20
 00) are influential classics. John is also renowned as one of the best geo
 logical mappers of all time. In this talk\, he will reflect on his geologi
 cal career and on the role of field mapping in the 21st century. Some of h
 is field maps will be on display.\nJohn's talk is of particular interest t
 o Part II students\, who will have submitted their own mapping projects th
 e previous day\, but all interested in field-based geology are encouraged
