DESCRIPTION:Professor Randy Schekman\, winner of the Nobel Prize for Physi
ology or Medicine in 2013\, has said that high profile scientific journals
\, and the professional editors who work for them\, are fashion obsessed l
uxuries supporting a system of distorting incentives as harmful to science
as the bonus culture has been to banking. Dr Chris Surridge has worked in
this ‘Sodom and Gommorrha’ for 20 years\, as an editor on several jou
rnals including Nature and PLOS ONE. He sees professional editors as champ
ions of innovation and the reason why peer review isn't more riddled with
bias and cronyism. In this talk he will give an insider’s view of what t
he role of a scientific editor actually is.\n
