DESCRIPTION:The Screen Media Group is delighted to announce that we will b
e kicking off Lent Term with a talk by William Fowler (Curator of artists'
moving image\, BFI National Archive)\, who will be presenting 'Night Life
: Derek Jarman and the 80's New Underground Film Scene'. William Fowler wa
s originally scheduled to open the ongoing lecture series last term\, howe
ver due to an emergency he was forced to cancel last minute. Fortunately\,
he has been kind enough to reschedule and will be presenting this upcomin
 g Tuesday\, January 21st.\n\nThis seminar presents a continuation of the o
ngoing Screen Media lecture series Mnemotechnics and the Archive\, which c
onsiders the ways in which individual\, institutional and social memories
have been understood to relate to media forms that participate in their in
 scription\, subversion\, perpetuation and effacement.\n\nDerek Jarman\, an
English director and stage designer\, was renowned for his experimental s
uper 8 mm films which formed the basis for much of his oeuvre. However\, h
is best known film\, the eponymous biography of Michelangelo Caravaggio\,
is of particular interest with regard to Mnemotechnics and the Archive as
it interrogates the conventions of historical narrative by incorporating a
nachronism and considerable re-imagination of its source material (much li
ke the work of Ken Russell\, with whom he worked earlier in his career). U
ltimately\, Jarman's films serve to question the way in which we remember
and rewrite history through the modern filmic narrative.\n\nThe Screen Med
