DESCRIPTION:The Zapiola anticyclone is a striking example of a large scale
recirculation taking place above a topographic anomaly.  It is a robust
but highly variable vortex observed in the Argentine basin\, with strong v
elocities measured at the bottom of the anticyclone.  We will ask in the
first part how surface intensified mesoscale eddies may lead to the forma
tion of such bottom-intensified mean flow. We will ask in the second part
how the eddy activity surrounding the Zapiola anticyclone may be related
to the observed vigorous variability of its mass transport.
