DESCRIPTION:The first reported observation of a solar flare was in white l
ight\, by Carrington (1859). In the modern era\, good observations of whit
e light flares have been relatively rare\, but those that exist can be use
d to diagnose the properties of plasma in the denser part of the solar atm
osphere during a flare. How the flare energy reaches the dense atmosphere
to produce a white-light flare is itself somewhat of a puzzle\; this talk
will discuss some recent observational results on white-light flares\, and
a theoretical model for how they are produced.
