DESCRIPTION:Semiconductor fabrication techniques allow researchers to make
devices\ncontaining just a single electron\, resembling an artificial ato
m\, with\nquantised energy levels\, but with far more control than in a re
al atom.\nThe long-term goal is to make a quantum computer using a set of
these\n"quantum dots"\, each holding a quantum bit of information ("qubit"
).\nProf. Ford will introduce these topics and will describe his work on\n
transferring single electrons between dots using sound waves travelling\na
 long a surface.
