DESCRIPTION:In 1971\, the community of Las Terrazas was officially inaugur
ated as part of the development plan for the Sierra del Rosario\, Pinar de
l Río province\, Cuba. A comprehensive reforestation and development plan
had preceded the construction of the village in a heavily impoverished ar
ea. Later\, it turned into one of Cuba’s first sustainable tourism devel
opment schemes\, and continues to be a model community. Oral testimony has
recently been published on the subject (Reynaldo González\, Conversacion
es en Las Terrazas\, Havanna 2010) which underpins a local identity interw
oven with a national process\, though its success arguably outscores that
 of the Cuban revolution today.
