SUMMARY:From Surface Chemistry to Heterogeneous Catalysis - Dr Stephen Jen
kins\, Department of Chemistry\, University of Cambridge

DESCRIPTION:The techniques of surface science are capable of providing dee
p insight into the fundamental processes of bond breaking and making at th
e interface between solid and fluid. Although such processes are indisputa
bly key to the mechanisms of heterogeneous catalysis\, however\, the link
is often obscured by "gaps" between the pressures\, temperatures and mater
ials used in real catalysts and those amenable to the surface science tool
kit. This talk will present a survey of several incisive surface technique
s\, showcasing the information they can provide and highlighting their ine
 vitable limitations.
