DESCRIPTION:Assessing Complex Structures:\nFaster\, Lighter\, Higher\, Lon
 ger\, Safer\, Cheaper\n\nOver the centuries\, exceptional engineers\, arch
itects and builders have created structures that elegantly work in harmony
with the elements\, carrying gravity and wind forces\, and that stand as
historical landmarks that connect us to past generations. \n\nChanging exp
ectations mean that structures are required to be taller\, longer\, more i
rregular\, lighter\, cheaper and safer. To deliver this\, engineers\, rese
archers\, analysts and experimentalists require new approaches to innovati
ve structural design and advanced assessment tools. \n\nThe 2014 CSIC Lect
ure will highlight some of the leaps that have been made in testing and an
alysing critical structural components. Successful projects presented by P
rofessor Spencer illustrate recent advances and innovations\, and point to
wards future challenges and opportunities.\n\n\nProf Bill Spencer\, Jr. is
the Director of the Newmark Structural Engineering Laboratory and the Mul
ti-axial Full-scale Substructure Testing and Simulation (MUST-SIM) facilit
y at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a Fellow of ASC
E\, the North American Editor in Chief of Smart Structures and Systems\, a
nd the past president of the Asia-Pacific Network of Centers for Research
 in Smart Structures Technology. \n
