DESCRIPTION:Preclinical and Clinical Animal Models in Translational Orthop
 aedic Research\nMatthew J. Allen\, Vet. M.B.\, Ph.D.\n\nDepartment of Vete
rinary Clinical Sciences\, The Ohio State University\, Columbus\, OH \n\nT
he use of animals in research remains controversial. While efforts should
always be made to replace animal use through the use of in-vitro alternati
ves such as cell culture or computer simulation\, there remains a clear ne
ed for in-vivo studies to better define disease mechanisms and evaluate ne
w therapies. In this presentation\, I will review our experience with the
use of preclinical animal models in musculoskeletal research\, with a part
icular emphasis on orthopedic oncology\, spine surgery and total joint rep
lacement. I will also discuss the tremendous opportunities that exist in u
sing clinical cases seen in the veterinary hospital as a natural bridge be
tween the research laboratory and eventual clinical deployment of new medi
cal and surgical treatment options in both humans and animals. \n
