DESCRIPTION:I will discuss some results that bound the number of automorph
 ic\nforms in various families\, such as cohomological automorphic forms of
 \nfixed level and growing weight on GL_2 over an imaginary quadratic field
 \,\nand certain nontempered forms on U(2\,1).  I will explain how these re
 sults\ncan be interpreted in terms of the cohomology of arithmetic manifol
 ds.
