DESCRIPTION:An extreme black hole is one with the lowest mass consistent w
ith a fixed charge or angular momentum. Supersymmetric black holes are nec
essarily extreme. Such black holes are generally believed to be classicall
y stable. However\, recently it was discovered that any extreme black hole
exhibits an instability at the event horizon. I will review this discover
y and discuss the nonlinear evolution of the instability.
