DESCRIPTION:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) comprise a large number of d
ifferent species. Most of the VOCs are emitted on the Earth’s surface fr
om a variety of biogenic and anthropogenic sources. VOCs are environmental
ly important as they are oxidized by the OH radical and thus significantly
determine its lifetime. This study aims to deepen the understanding of th
e spatial and vertical distribution of VOCs in the lower troposphere. Usin
g a newly developed GC-MSD on board the Zeppelin NT\, fast VOCs measuremen
ts were conducted during the PEAGSOS campaigns across the Netherlands and
Italy in 2012. The results show that the concentrations of the primary emi
tted VOCs are lower compared to the oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs). Particularly\
, the comparison of the results to the measured OH reactivity reveals that
the OVOCs are of great importance as they are one of the largest OH sinks
  across central and southern Europe.\n\n\n
