DESCRIPTION:I'll try and argue that much of our current understanding of t
 he universe - from its origins to its most fundamental components - rests 
 crucially on the framework of quantum field theories. After a general over
 view\, time permitting\, I'll talk about the much dreaded concept of renor
 malization\, the difficulty of introducing mass and the celebrated Higgs m
 echanism.
