DESCRIPTION:The past five decades have been characterised by spectacular s
cientific advances\, spanning particle physics\, molecular biology and neu
roscience. Yet some of the most 'basic' building blocks of biology\, the b
rain and the biosphere remain poorly understood. What are some of the outs
tanding _known unknowns_? What might be the key _unknown unknowns_ in some
of the most important areas of science? Finally\, what might we need to d
o differently in future to address them?\n\n*About the speaker*\n\nStephen
Emmott is Head of Computational Science at Microsoft. He leads an interna
tional\, interdisciplinary research programme and scientific team\, centre
 d on Microsoft's Computational Science Laboratory\, in Cambridge\, whose g
oal is to make\, enable and accelerate transformational advances in scienc
e in areas of societal importance. Stephen is also Visiting Professor of B
iological Computation at University College London\, Visiting Professor of
Computational Science at the University of Oxford\, and a Distinguished F
ellow of the UK National Endowment for Science\, Technology and the Arts (
Nesta).\n\n*Booking*\n\nBooking is essential as places are limited:\n\n"Bo
