DESCRIPTION:I will argue that black holes can act as natural laboratories
for the gravitational interaction and for distinguishing between general r
elativity and alternative theories. In order to support this claim\, I wil
l consider black holes in scalar-tensor gravity and in Lorentz-violating t
 heories as characteristic examples.
