 .\n\nIan Cross is Professor of Music and Science at the University of Camb
 ridge\, and Director of the Centre for Music and Science in the Faculty of
  Music. He has been a Fellow and Director of Studies in Music of Wolfson C
 ollege since 1994\, and is closely involved with the musical life of the C
 ollege.\n\nSince 1980 he has been involved in experimental investigations 
 of the perception of tonal structures as well as of the role of culture an
 d formal education in shaping musical cognition. He has explored the gener
 al limits and constraints on scientific accounts of music and is particula
 rly involved in research into the relation between music and evolutionary 
 theory.\n\nHe is the author of over a hundred papers and book chapters\, a
 nd was co-editor of _Musical Structure and Cognition_ (1985) and _Represen
 ting Musical Structure_ (1991)\, both published by Academic Press. More re
 cently\, he has co-edited the _Oxford Handbook of Music Psychology_ and th
 e volume _Language and Music as Cognitive Systems_ (2011)\, both published
