DESCRIPTION:To attempt to explain the geo-political\, historical and socio
logical forces that impinge upon the emergence of the Islamic phenomenon i
s a task beyond our present scope. As for the infinitely more complex matt
er of describing how these forces have combined with the minute and invisi
ble movements and encounters within and between small organisations\, info
rmal groups and families in order to give rise to new communities\, lies e
ven further from our compass. \n\nTherefore\, this short narrative makes n
o claim to trace the unknowable origins of Islam in Britain or even in Nor
folk. What it provides is the slenderest outline\, based on the recollecti
ons of those who were present\, of certain events that would eventually le
ad to the settlement in Norwich of the community whose story forms the bas
is of this presentation.\n\nUthman Ibrahim-Morrison was born to Jamaican p
arents in London and studied law as an undergraduate at UCL before going o
n to pursue postgraduate studies in applied linguistics at the University
of Kent at Canterbury. He became Muslim in 1987 and had a leading hand in
the establishment of the Brixton Mosque in South London in 1990. He became
founder Chairman of the Blackstone Foundation educational trust in 1993 a
nd presently lives in the city of Norwich as a prominent member of the wel
l known Ihsan Mosque community\, where he has been occupied with specialis
 t teaching\, writing and publishing since 1995.
