DESCRIPTION:While classical stability analysis usually assumes that the ba
se state is\nconstant in time\, many patten forming systems that arise\nin
practice have non-constant base states. We suggest an approach that\nappl
ies if the evolution is slow\, and that takes into account\nthe changing i
nstability characteristics. We present results for several\nproblems from
continuum mechanics such as B\\'enard-Marangoni\nconvection in evaporating
liquid mixtures or receding liquid and solid\nlayers.\n
