DESCRIPTION:It is conjectured that exact coherent structures\, finite-ampl
itude solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations\, are key components to an
understanding of turbulent dynamics. Exact coherent structures can form an
invariant set about which chaos is supported\, and it is thought that tur
bulence related phenomena are a manifestation of these chaotic dynamics. B
y continuation of tertiary states from supercritical\, spanwise rotating p
lane Couette flow\, we find obliquely oriented structures which persist in
subcritical plane Couette flow. The structures emerge in a saddle-node bi
furcation in plane Couette flow\, similar to previously found coherent str
uctures in the subcritical shear flows. We discuss the symmetry properties
of our coherent structures\, and investigate their relevance to oblique t
urbulent phenomena such as turbulent stripes.
