DESCRIPTION:I will present a study of the Zeeman splitting in ballistic ho
le\nquantum wires formed in a (311)A quantum well by surface gate\nconfine
ment. Transport measurements clearly show lifting of the spin\ndegeneracy
and crossings of the subbands when an in-plane magnetic\nfield B is applie
d parallel to the wire. When B is oriented\nperpendicular to the wire\, no
spin-splitting is discernible up to B =\n8.8 T. This anisotropic behavior
is also measured for the 0.7\nstructure and the zero bias anomaly. The ob
served large Zeeman\nsplitting anisotropy in our hole quantum wires demons
 trates the\nimportance of quantum-confinement for spin-splitting in\nnanos
 tructures with strong spin-orbit coupling.\n\n
