DESCRIPTION:Detecting objects from noisy data-sets is common practice in a
strophysics. Object detection presents a particular challenge in terms of
statistical inference\, not only because of its multi-modal nature but als
o because it combines both the parameter estimation (for characterizing ob
jects) and model selection problems (in order to quantify the detection).
Bayesian inference provides a mathematically rigorous solution to this pro
blem by calculating marginal posterior probabilities of models with differ
ent number of objects. I will discuss several Bayesian approaches to objec
t detection problems and describe some recent applications these methods i
 n the detection of exoplanets.
