SUMMARY:The balance of power: accretion and outflow in black holes and ne
utron stars - Rob Fender (Oxford)

DESCRIPTION:In this talk I shall review the current state of the art in ou
r empirical understanding between the properties of accretion flows around
(stellar mass) black holes and two different forms of outflow\, namely wi
nds and jets. This includes new analyses based not only on X-ray colours\,
but also variability properties and X-ray reflection. I will showcase new
work which shows that neutron stars behave just like the black holes in n
early all respects\, and will discuss the integrated feedback of kinetic e
nergy\, momentum and mass over the course of the evolution of such sources
 .
