DESCRIPTION:We will discuss the equation of state approach for modelling p
erturbations in dark energy and modified gravity and various examples incl
uding Lorentz violating massive gravity and generalized scalar fields. A b
y-product of this discussion is a connection between massive gravity and t
he rigidity of spacetime. Having established equations of state for the pe
rturbations in these models\, we derive constraints from present data from
the Planck Satellite\, BAOs and lensing observations. We conclude by look
ing at the prospects for future observations made by a CMB satellite and E
 uclid. \n
