 ggs bundles on a Riemann Surface\, and their moduli space. The talk will s
 urvey the basics of the theory focusing on the rich geometry of the moduli
  space of Higgs bundles. In the end we will indicate why Higgs bundles tod
 ay 28 years after the Hitchin's landmark paper is still a hot topic.
