DESCRIPTION:Case studies bring out striking contributions\nof shifting amo
ng expressive strategies while treating a given topic mathematically. Math
ematics shapes special-purpose contents\, by the expressive means\nit depl
oys (and avoids) in distinctive contexts (modes)\nespecially suited to cer
tain aspects of problems. The intellectual power of mathematics resides no
t only in rigorous proof but also in coordinating suitable modes to overal
l purposes.\n\nThe first talk will present the general philosophical\npict
ure\, with elementary examples. The second talk will\nconsider mathematica
lly more advanced examples such as\ngroup representation theory and algebr
 aic number theory.
