DESCRIPTION:When a group acts on a topological space\, it is often useful
to be able to find the closed orbits for the action. If the group is algeb
raic and the space is an affine variety\, then the Hilbert-Mumford Theorem
is very helpful tool for doing this\, but it only works in certain settin
gs. In this talk I'll present a new version of the theorem which works mor
e widely and I'll illustrate it with some examples from linear algebra. Th
e ideas behind the new result form part of a wider programme of developing
"rationality" tools in Geometric Invariant Theory\, and I will also explo
re this if I have time.\n
