SUMMARY:A Pint of Knowledge: The Chemistry of Peptides: &quot\;small prote
 ins&quot\; fighting &quot\;big diseases&quot\; - Dr. Albert Isidro Llobet

DESCRIPTION:Peptides are short chains of amino acids that can be found in
places as far apart as the depths of the Caribbean Sea\, the African and A
sian deserts and our body. Peptides have great potential as medicines\, ha
ving the same components as proteins they can selectively interact with th
e protein causing a disease or modulate protein-protein interactions. Hist
orically\, the major limitations of peptides have been poor stability in o
ur body and lack of cell permeability which prevented them from reaching t
heir target proteins and have a therapeutic effect. Recently\, chemists ha
ve found ways of obtaining peptides that are stable and cell permeable and
the approvals of new peptidic medicines are increasing year after year. I
will introduce you to the peptide world\, discussing how we can make them
in the lab using from tea-bags to "Breaking Bad-type" chemistry\, what pr
operties make them interesting to the pharmaceutical industry and how they
  can cure big diseases.
