DESCRIPTION:The atmosphere is a thin sheet of air extending from the surfa
ce of the Earth into space\, it is about 60 miles thick\, and constitutes
less than a millionth of the Earth’s total mass\, yet human beings depen
d upon it as a nourishing essence to their continued existence. But what e
xactly is the atmosphere? And more importantly how do we tell what on Eart
h is going on up there? In this presentation Dr Illingworth\, a lecturer i
n Science Communication at Manchester Metropolitan University\, talks abou
t the thin blue line separating the habitable environs of Earth’s surfac
e from the harshness of outer space\, describing how scientists monitor th
e atmosphere using a variety of observational techniques and instrumentati
 on.
