DESCRIPTION:In this paper I will discuss the collecting habits of William 
 Courten\, alias Charleton\, whose collection was absorbed by Hans Sloane\,
  and thus became part of the foundation collection of the  British Museum/
 British Library/Natural History.  Courten's collection  was important for 
 several fellows of the Royal Society\, including John Ray\, Francis Willug
 hby and Edward Lhuyd\, who all acknowledged his generosity. I will be disc
 ussing how Courten collected naturalia by examining his ledger from the la
 te 1680s.
