DESCRIPTION:The exaggerated properties of Rydberg atoms are exploited in a
wide range of experiments in atomic physics as well as in quantum informa
tion science. The first two lectures of this series have shown how the ver
y strong interactions of these atoms with microwave radiation are used in
cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments to perform fundamental tests of
quantum laws. In this third lecture\, I will review experiments taking ad
vantage of the very strong dipole-dipole coupling between Rydberg atoms to
perform quantum logic operations and to study new states of quantum matte
r which may lead to promising applications.
