DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will describe a new method of measuring the phy
 sical conditions of the gas in DLAs using the fine structure lines of carb
 on and silicon. The method is able to measure the volume density and tempe
 rature of the gas simultaneously. The results from this study suggests tha
 t the gas in high redshift galaxies giving rise to DLAs can vary significa
 ntly from one galaxy to another. I will compare these results with previou
 s studies of DLAs and how these results fit in with the cold neutral mediu
 m/warm neutral medium paradigm of the high redshift universe.
