DESCRIPTION:One of the fundamental tasks in quantum information theory is
to establish the capacity of noisy quantum channels\, that is\, the maximu
m rate at which information can be transmitted from one party to another o
ver the channel with vanishing error. The strong converse theorem addresse
s the optimality of this rate\, in proving that the error goes to its maxi
mum value at rates above the capacity. The question of proving a strong co
nverse theorem for the transmission of various types of information over q
uantum channels has been a primary focus of recent research\, with the int
roduction of new proof techniques. In this seminar we introduce the above
notions in detail and concentrate\, in particular\, on the question of pro
ving a strong converse theorem for quantum information transmission.
