DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:*\nThe small Middle Eastern nation of Qatar is much 
 in the news\, both for its political maneuvering and its human rights abus
 es.  This talk will describe the breathtakingly vast and rapid urban trans
 formation of Qatar and how a design-research center is addressing some of 
 nation's most pressing problems related to its lofty ambitions.\n\n*Biogra
 phy:*\nChomowicz received a Bachelors of Architecture Degree from the Coop
 er Union for the Advancement of Science and Art\, a Masters of Design Stud
 ies in the history and theory of architecture from Harvard University\, st
 udied economics and political economy at the Graduate Faculty at the New S
 chool for Social Research\, and is currently completing his PhD at London 
 Metropolitan University.\n\nThroughout his professional career Chomowicz h
 as maintained an equal footing in design education with teaching and admin
 istrative positions at the University of Florida\, Catholic University of 
 America\, the Cooper Union and the Johns Hopkins University. Chomowicz's r
 esearch focuses on the ancient origins of architecture and urban planning 
 in the Middle East and its relationship to current building schemes. He ha
 s been the head architect on a number of archaeological excavations throug
 hout the region.\n
