DESCRIPTION:When relativistic spin-orbit coupling dominates over the excha
nge and orbital-lattice interactions\, the spin and orbital degrees of fre
edom are no longer separated\, and it is more convenient to formulate the
problem in terms of effective (pseudo)spin Hamiltonians. This greatly redu
ces the initially large spin-orbital Hilbert space\; however\, the resulti
ng low-energy Hamiltonians may obtain highly nontrivial structure\, becaus
e the pseudospins inherit bond-directional and frustrated nature of orbita
l interactions. I will discuss ”the pseudospin” physics in layered iri
dium oxides\, and present also the re-cent work on spin-orbit driven magne
tic criticality in d4 Mott insulators such as ruthenates.
