DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:*\nBackdoors present in hardware or embedded firmwar
e is a potential security \nthreat. However\, the reason for their existen
ce is questionable. In this talk \nimplications imposed by backdoors on re
al systems will be presented at various \nlevels from silicon hardware (So
C FPGA)\, through embedded firmware (Smartcard) \nto system software (Indu
strial controller). I will show how the backdoors can \nbe found and explo
ited. The aim of this talk is to raise a discussion about \nthe influence
of backdoors on security and reliability.\n\n*Bio:*\nDr Sergei Skorobogato
v is a Senior Research Associate at the University of \nCambridge Computer
Laboratory and a member of the Security Group. He received \nPh.D. degree
in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge Computer \nLaborator
y in 2005. His research interests include hardware security analysis \nof
smartcards\, microcontrollers\, FPGAs and ASICs. He pioneered optical faul
t \ninjection attacks in 2001\, which have influenced major rethink within
\nsemiconductor industry on the security protection of semiconductor chip
s and \nforced introduction of new evaluation procedures and countermeasur
es. His \nlatest research is about backdoors and Trojans in hardware devic
 es.\n
