DESCRIPTION:The talk will describe ongoing taxonomic research into the UK
springtails (Collembola) using COI barcodes. The problems encountered are
not unique to the group but indicative of similar issues in many inverteb
rate classes. Within the Collembola\, the weight of evidence in the "lump
ers vs splitters" debate is that in most cases the splitters were not spli
tting things nearly far enough! A UK-wide sampling campaign to define two
common genera (Entomobrya and Lepidocyrtus) has confirmed cryptic species
in both genera\, and that the entire taxonomy of Lepidocyrtus needs redef
ining using molecular tools. Common UK Collembolan clades have turned up
in the sub-Antarctic and all major continents\, suggesting widespread syna
nthropic dispersal of these overlooked soil animals. In future high-throu
ghput sampling will be required to quantify the distribution of clades\, a
nd distributional databases will need to be reconfigured to recognise gene
 tic data.
