DESCRIPTION:I will construct effective microscopic field theories which pr
ovide a description of a general class of black branes near extremality. I
n the regime where the gravity description is valid\, the field theory is
strongly coupled and exhibits a scaling regime. With a simple application
of the virial theorem the microscopic theory can be used to estimate the b
lack brane entropy\, yielding the correct dependence on temperature\, bran
e tension\, gravitational coupling\, the number of microscopic constituent
s\, N\, as well as factors of \\pi and sphere volumes. The class of theori
es is general enough to encompass black branes in string/M theory\, as wel
l as certain 4d charged dilatonic black holes.
