DESCRIPTION:The terahertz (THz) frequency range provides a rich area of ph
ysics to be explored\, and has proved useful in many real-world applicatio
ns\, such as security imaging and gas sensing. The terahertz quantum casca
de laser (QCL) is a unipolar heterogeneous semiconductor laser that has th
e potential to be the THz source of choice for many of these applications\
, being both powerful and frequency selective. However\, these devices suf
fer from highly divergent beam patterns\, proving detrimental to power del
ivery over longer distances. In this talk I shall give an overview of the
THz QCL\, and discuss progress towards a fibre coupled QCL system. I shall
also outline potential applications of such a system\, and areas for impr
 ovement in the existing methodology.
