DESCRIPTION:The traditional view of prolonged exposure to “stress” dur
ing development is one of maladaptive constraint. In contrast\, the “dev
elopmental matching hypothesis” suggests that developmental stress is no
t necessarily a bad thing. Instead\, negative effects of developmental str
ess might occur due to a mismatch between environmental conditions at diff
erent life stages. To test this hypothesis\, we exposed Japanese quail to
stressors during different developmental stages and presented them with no
vel stressful situations in adulthood. In this seminar\, I will present ou
r findings showing that developmental stress facilitated both exploration
and social learning in novel surroundings. These results suggest that deve
lopmental stress may lead to adaptive behaviours under certain circumstanc
 es.
