DESCRIPTION:Director Marlen Khutsiev will introduce and discuss his film '
 It was the Month of May' (Byl mesiats mai\, 1970\,109 mins).  In Russian W
 ITHOUT SUBTITLES. A synopsis will be available on the night. Screened to c
 oincide with the 69th observance of Victory Day\, the film is set in the f
 irst days after the end of World War II. It follows the lives of a group o
 f Soviet soldiers as they interact with the residents of the German villag
 e where they are stationed. A reception\, hosted by the Cambridge Universi
 ty Russian Society\, will follow the screening\, which is free and open to
  the public.\n\nMarlen Martynovich Khutsiev was born in Tbilisi in 1925\, 
 began his filmmaking career in Odessa and has lived in the same Moscow apa
 rtment for the last 26 years. His early work was shaped by Soviet filmmake
 rs’ discovery of Italian neorealism in the 1950s\; his great 1960s films
  have more in common with the work of Antonioni and Godard. Frequently sub
 ject to politically motivated attacks by Soviet authorities\, his films ar
 e few in number\, but each an aesthetic and historical landmark. He recent
 ly retired from his post as Head of the Directing Faculty at the Russian S
 tate Institute of Cinematography. At age 88 he is still active as a filmma
 ker and president of the Russian Federation’s Guild of Film Directors. H
 e is also a lively raconteur with many stories to tell about his own films
 \, as well as his work with filmmakers Ihor Savchenko\, Sergei Parajanov\,
