DESCRIPTION:Winton teatime discussion hosted by Prof David MacKay and Prof
essor David Cahen\, who is The Rowland and Sylvia Schaefer Chair in Energy
Research in the Department of Materials and Interfaces at the Weizmann In
stitute of Science. \n\nIn this discussion he will introduce work he perfo
rmed with Prof. Igor Lubomirski of the Weizmann Institute of Science.\n\nA
bstract:\nRapidly occurring changes in energy availability lead to the tit
le question. Although the commonly perceived answer is yes\, we look at th
e issue because of two issues: a) which amounts of energy or major materia
ls‘ types can be diverted from one to the other to allow changes to new
energy sources\, without disrupting our daily life\; b) can we supply the
quantities of materials\, required to transition to new energy sources esp
. if are these byproducts of large scale production cycles? Both issues ne
ed to be considered when changes in the energy-materials production/consum
ption are planned to prevent major disruptions in living standards.\n\n
